Podere Marella is a small, family-owned winery in the Colli del Trasimeno DOC area, on the border between Umbria and Tuscany in Central Italy. It is a pioneer in organic wine making as it was founded in 1974 by Fiammetta Inga a young lady with a fairsighted vision that brought her to choose an organic approach although in Italy few at the time were interested- or even new about it- judging her choice as somewhat eccentric and uneconomical.
From that moment on Fiammetta, who personally took care of all the winery’s tasks – hopping on and off the tractor in between bureaucratic work/paperwork – never stopped working to improve the quality of her wines, winning important awards along the way.
Today the activity is taken on by Fiammetta's son, Cosimo, and his family. From the estate’s vineyards - extending over 7,5 hectares – seven between red, white and rosé Umbria IGT and Colli del Trasimeno DOC wines are produced from the local grape varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Gamay del Trasimeno, Grechetto and Vermentino.
Despite the fact that Podere Marella is located in Umbria, which is not one of the most renowned wine-producing regions in Italy, it produces high-quality wines that have nothing to envy from their Tuscan neighbours. In particular, its Godot Sangiovese is comparable to a good Brunello di Montalcino with a much more affordable price, for obvious reasons.
